SDG16: Peace and Justice|Theme: Understanding Social Justice
Fairness and justice are not only concepts in laws or systems—they can be learned and practiced in daily life. By observing and discussing, we can understand social injustice and learn to make the right choices.
Understanding Inequality in Society
Some schools have fewer library books or classrooms, and some children cannot join extracurricular activities. These gaps may seem small, but they directly affect learning opportunities and self-confidence. Understanding inequality is the first step to caring for society.
In classrooms, teachers can guide discussions: Why do some children have more resources than others? What consequences might arise from unequal resource distribution? Through discussion, students not only learn to analyze problems but also develop empathy and a sense of justice.
The Core of Justice: Who is Heard, Who is Seen
Justice is not just rules—it is about making sure everyone has a voice. Teachers can organize role-playing activities, letting students take on different roles: policymakers, children with fewer resources, volunteers, or parents. Experiencing different perspectives helps students understand the real-life meaning of fairness and justice.
Small Actions to Build a Sense of Justice
Students can start with small actions:
- Notice who may need help at school or in the community
- Collaborate on small community or school projects
- Encourage discussions in class or at home about fairness and respecting every voice
These small actions may seem simple but can cultivate a sense of justice and responsibility, making society fairer.
Shane Students’ Reflection Exercise
- What unfair situations can you notice at school or in your community?
- If you were a teacher, what activity would you design to help classmates understand fairness and justice?
- Can you think of three simple ways to practice justice in daily life?
